Halton has an aging population. While the overall population of Halton increased 14% between 2006 and 2011, during this same time the number of seniors in our region increased 21%. It is also reported that roughly 34% of Halton older adults aged 65+ do not comply with Canada’s Low-Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines .
These statistics combined with the fact that older adults are often dealing with issues like isolation, loss, failing health and boredom indicates that we need specific approaches and services aimed at helping seniors with substance use issues.
